Action for the Civil Society: Turning Ideas into Shared Civic Action

Action for the Civil Society was born from a simple but powerful belief: that every citizen, professional, organisation and community has knowledge, experience and ideas that can contribute to a better society. Based in Athens, Greece, we created AfCS as a civil non-profit company and, more importantly, as an open platform where people can come together, share expertise and transform ideas into meaningful action. Our dream is to function as an ecosystem for initiatives that respond to the real needs of today’s civil society, free of charge and with a strong sense of responsibility towards the everyday citizen. We believe that social change does not always begin with large institutions or distant policies; very often, it starts with small communities identifying the problems they face and working together to find practical, human-centred solutions.

Our mission is closely connected to inclusion, participation and solidarity. Through our work, we focus on issues such as social exclusion, unemployment, equal treatment, non-discrimination, volunteering, environmental awareness, lifelong learning, and the integration of refugees and migrants into Greek and European society. We are especially interested in supporting groups that often face barriers to participation, including young people, women, migrants, disadvantaged communities and people with unequal access to education or the labour market. For us, working with young people means creating spaces where they feel heard, respected and capable of shaping their own future. It also means giving them tools, confidence and opportunities to become active members of their local communities and of Europe as a whole. Dialogue is one of our most important tools, because we believe that a modern participatory society can only be built when people are invited to speak, listen and act together.

What gives AfCS its particular character is the diversity and energy of our team. We are a group of young Greeks with experience in international relations, public management, biology, biotechnology, engineering, international and environmental law, digital product development, project management and research. This combination of backgrounds allows us to approach social challenges from different angles and to connect knowledge with action. Our team members have experience in organising conferences and workshops, developing learning modules and educational tools, digitalising training materials, designing web and mobile applications, and managing European-funded projects.

Over the past years, we have been involved in a wide range of Erasmus+ and European initiatives related to education, social inclusion, special educational needs, sustainable eating, youth social entrepreneurship, service learning, inclusive digital citizenship, anti-violence education, money education for young people, environmental sustainability, AI in education, Ukrainian student integration, and support for women at risk of exclusion. Each project has reminded us that European cooperation becomes truly meaningful when it creates something useful for people’s daily lives.

Joining the YES Network feels like a natural step in this journey. The spirit of Young European Shapers speaks directly to the reason AfCS exists: to help young people move from being observers of social change to becoming its creators. We were motivated to join because we see YES not only as a project, but as a living community of organisations that believe in youth participation, democratic engagement and local impact with a European dimension. For us, being part of this network means learning from the stories, methods and experiences of others, while also sharing the lessons we have gained from working in Greece and across European partnerships. It means being surrounded by people who understand that empowering young people is not a slogan; it is daily work, patience, trust-building and the willingness to create opportunities where they may not yet exist.

Through the YES Project, we hope to collaborate with other members in a sincere and practical way. AfCS can contribute experience in European project management, educational content development, digital tools, sustainability, inclusion, social entrepreneurship and community-based initiatives. At the same time, we are eager to learn from partners who bring different realities, target groups and methods to the table. We hope to co-create activities, resources and campaigns that help young people strengthen their voice, understand their role in democratic life, and feel connected to a wider European community. The impact we hope to create together is not only measured in events, publications or project outputs, but in young people who feel more confident, communities that become more open and inclusive, and organisations that continue to cooperate long after a project ends. For AfCS, this is the real value of YES: building bridges between people, ideas and local realities, so that together we can shape a Europe where every young person has the chance to participate, belong and lead.
